How we vet brands and products Healthline only shows you brands and products that we stand behind.
Our team thoroughly researches and evaluates the recommendations we make on our site. To establish that the product manufacturers addressed safety and efficacy standards, we: Evaluate ingredients and composition: Do they have the potential to cause harm?Fact-check all health claims: Do they align with the current body of scientific evidence?Assess the brand: Does it operate with integrity and adhere to industry best practices? We do the research so you can find trusted products for your health and wellness. We’ve tested over 100 CBD oils, gummies, topicals, and capsules and consider these eight products the best CBD for sleep. Here’s why.
Research into cannabidiol (CBD) is ongoing, but early results suggest that it’s promising for helping with anxiety , pain , and sleep issues. And if pain and anxiety are hindering your sleep, CBD may indirectly benefit your sleep by helping you manage those symptoms.
We’ve evaluated hundreds of CBD products and brands and tested dozens of CBD products that have passed our initial vetting. Here are the CBD oils, creams, capsules, and gummies we’ve found to be most beneficial for getting to sleep and staying asleep.

Healthline's review
These berry-flavored gummies by Cornbread Hemp contain a high amount of full-spectrum CBD at 50 milligrams (mg) per gummy, as well as up to 2 mg of THC per serving.
This is our pick for the best overall CBD gummy because it’s a strong gummy that most testers find effective at a reasonable price point.
Three out of four testers commented that these gummies made them feel sleepy and relaxed.
One tester with obstructive sleep apnea did not feel that the gummies affected her sleep for better or worse but did feel that they helped her calm some end-of-day anxiety that bubbled up. If that tends to happen to you and makes it difficult for you to fall asleep, these gummies could be worth trying.
If you’ve never tried CBD before, you might want to start with one of the lower potency options, which contain 20 or 25 mg of CBD each. You could even try half a gummy to see how that affects you first.
Testers also commented that the flavor was the right amount of sweet and didn’t have bitter hemp notes or taste heavily of artificial fruit flavors.
These gummies are vegan and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-certified organic. They don’t contain any artificial colors, high fructose corn syrup , or gelatin .
If you’re interested in other gummies, we’ve named three others that have proven helpful for sleep in our testing.

What our tester says “The gummies taste sweet initially. Each gummy is dusted with sugar crystals and tastes like jam plus that medicinal flavor cannabis ingredients tend to impart. I noticed that I felt drowsy within an hour or two of having the gummies.
“Over the course of 3 consecutive days I had 1 or 2 gummies at night and found I felt sleepier faster or sooner than I normally would. I didn’t change my nighttime habits other than taking the gummies, so I had the same amount of screen time as I normally would (laptop, TV, and phone).
“I also noticed that I slept through the night without waking up until the morning. So, overall, the gummies were useful for me for sleep.”
— Candice Abellon, Healthline editor (tried the gummies for sleep)
“I took one gummy every day for 3 weeks, usually in the evening. After taking a gummy, I felt effects around 45 mins later.
“The flavor was good and not too overpowering, and I didn’t notice any earthy taste like I’ve experienced in some other CBD gummies I have tried. The peach taste of the gummies was very natural and subtle.
“I did not notice any real difference in my sleep, positive or negative, when taking these gummies regularly.”
— Heather Riesebeck, Healthline team member
“The Cornbread berry gummies were some of the best-tasting CBD gummies I’ve had so far. The berry taste is deep and fruity and manages to mask the CBD and THC taste really well. It also has a really good texture that melts in your mouth. The sugar crystals aren’t too much, as they can be with other gummies.
“I tried it for 2 days. The first night I tried 1 gummy (25 mg CBD, 1 mg THC), and the second night I tried 2 gummies (50 mg CBD, 2 mg THC). I took the gummies at night since it did cause me to feel a low level of highness.
“On the first day, I felt the effects within 2 hours. I felt a little high and sleepy, though my mind did race a bit.”
— Jamie Elmer, Healthline team member
“I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor of these gummies. They have a slight hemp flavor, but it’s not too strong, so the berry flavor comes through nicely. There’s also a small coating of sugar on the outside of the gummy that adds a touch of extra sweetness.
“Though I noticed very little (if any) effects the first couple of days, by the third day I definitely noticed feeling less stressed throughout the day.
“I also slept well at night (though that’s not usually an issue for me).”
— Sydney Samuels, Healthline team member and tester

Healthline's review
This isolate oil from Medterra may be a good choice for people who are looking to avoid even trace amounts of THC. It contains only two ingredients: CBD and organic MCT oil.
Because it’s an isolate instead of a full-spectrum product, it contains only CBD — no other compounds from the cannabis plant.
Our tester who also loves the highly potent full-spectrum Aspen Green oil pick below still felt this oil helped her relax and relieve tension. It may indirectly help you get to sleep more easily and may be ideal if you’re looking for more mild effects.
We’ve also found that this is one of the few CBD oils we’ve tried, if not the only one, that’s truly unflavored, without any sweeteners or flavors or an overly bitter hemp taste. So it’s a great oil to add to a tea or another beverage in the evening if that’s part of your wind-down routine.
The non-GMO formula is available in strengths ranging from 500 mg per bottle all the way up to 6,000 mg per bottle, which shakes out to anywhere between 16 mg and 100 mg of CBD per 1-mL serving.
What our tester says “This is one of my favorite unflavored CBD oils without THC. It is truly unflavored, which makes it a great addition to beverages.
“I like the 1,000-mg bottle, and it’s great that there are so many potencies available. This oil has helped me to relax after a long workday, and I keep it around for whenever I need some help relieving tension and anxiety.”

Healthline's review
This full-spectrum CBD oil from Aspen Green is USDA-certified organic and has a sweet Tropical flavor. Our editor who often experiences anxiety before bed reports that this oil always helps her feel sleepy and get to sleep when she’s having trouble quieting anxious thoughts.
It contains a high dose of CBD, at 110 mg per serving. But there’s room to customize your dose if you’re new to CBD, and we definitely recommend starting slow. The dropper is marked with 1/4-milliliter (mL) servings, and each 1/4 mL contains a little more than 25 mg of CBD. You could even start with half that much.
Aspen Green products are made from hemp plants grown in Colorado and are third-party tested to ensure purity. They’re free of toxins, formaldehyde, phthalates, parabens, and sulfates.
If you prefer a gummy but want one stronger than our Cornbread Hemp pick above, Aspen Green also makes a 100-mg gummy that’s one of our favorite CBD gummies for sleep and overall.
What our tester says “This oil has a mixed flavor; it does taste strongly of hemp but mixed with tropical notes. It’s not a flavor for everyone, but I liked it.
“I noticed feeling very sleepy after taking a full dropper (110 mg of CBD). I reach for this oil when I’m having trouble falling asleep, and it seems to do the trick every time!”

However, it’s made with some of the other plant compounds, such as terpenes and flavonoids, which could be more beneficial than CBD alone.
That makes it a good option if you’re not quite ready for full-spectrum products but you want more than CBD isolate. Our tester says that while she sometimes needs and likes the extra effects of products that contain some THC (for example, the Cornbread Hemp and Aspen Green gummies), she doesn’t always want that strong of an effect and often prefers a broad-spectrum oil at bedtime for a slower effect.
She found that 50 mg was effective, and bumping up to 100 mg didn’t have any extra benefits. More isn’t always better — start small and see what works for you.
What our tester says “It sometimes takes me a while to fall asleep, so I decided to use this cbdMD oil strictly at bedtime. I took it to help with falling asleep faster and found that it helped me relax to be able to drift off more easily and stay asleep the whole night.
“I’ve dealt with some anxiety at bedtime for most of my life. My psychiatrist prescribed Trazadone, which I take only occasionally. I have found that higher doses of CBD (and, additionally, THC edibles at 5- to 10-mg doses) have helped me to fall asleep faster and stay asleep (and honestly, both work better than the prescription).
“The product tasted like berry mixed with a hemp-y sort of taste — not grassy like some CBD products, but there was a mix of flavors. Some CBD oils that I’ve tried have been flavored in a way that is purely flavor, without any hint of hemp whatsoever. I don’t mind a hemp-y taste, but for users who might want to avoid that, this oil is not for them.
“I took 50 mg every night before bed for 3 weeks. I also had a few nights where I took 100 mg to see if I noticed any difference. I found that 50 mg was plenty to help me fall asleep and noticed no additional benefits from taking 100 mg.
“I like that the product is broad-spectrum, so only traces of THC and no psychoactive effects. I have found that some higher dose CBD oils that are full-spectrum can lead to psychoactive effects (I am quite sensitive to THC, so even 2 mg THC may cause physical effects). Despite liking THC, I don’t always want to feel those types of effects, so I prefer the broad-spectrum oil for bedtime since it relaxes me.
“I felt the effects about 30 to 40 minutes in. That’s about standard for when I take a CBD oil. I’d say the effects are mild but in a gentle way, not an ineffective way. It didn’t make me pass out but also was a sort of slow burn, a gentle drifting-off effect.”

Healthline's review If you’re having trouble sleeping because of muscle aches, applying this organic, non-GMO cream may help. A cooling cream, in particular, can offer much-needed relief.
This water-based cream from Aspen Green has a cooling effect and contains 1,000 mg of full-spectrum CBD. You can apply it to areas such as your back, neck, knees, shoulders, legs, and calves.
It’s made from 100% natural, food-grade ingredients, meaning it’s free of artificial preservatives and synthetic ingredients. The company warns that some natural separation may happen with this cream, so keep in mind that it may need a good stir before application.
This cream contains organic menthol, which may affect its scent. But one reviewer notes that this product doesn’t have an overpowering aroma.
What our tester says “The product has been awesome for pain relief. I noticed immediate relief from intense pain I was having. The cooling sensation offers a reduction of pain, and the cream then penetrates your muscles to relieve additional pain, numbing the area for some time.
“I was recently diagnosed with sciatica and have been experiencing some intense lower back pain. Heat, ice, and Advil have all failed to help. I tried another CBD muscle cream that hadn’t done much for pain relief. When Aspen Green’s cooling muscle cream showed up at my doorstep, I was hopeful, and I was not disappointed.
“It helps if you spend some time rubbing it in, so be sure to give yourself a little massage when applying. I only wish there was more in the container, as several reviewers on the website also noted.
“The cooling cream provides instant relief, and the texture of the cream is smooth and luxurious. It doesn’t feel greasy or oily when you apply. One of the best muscle creams I’ve used.”

CBD potency: 100 mg per softgel, 200 mg per softgel Price per mg: $0.03 Price: $79.99 Healthline's review For those who prefer CBD in a good old-fashioned vitamin capsule or softgel, this is currently one of our favorite CBD softgels after 2024 testing.
They are priced reasonably for a potent serving, and they don’t have any flavor.
Our tester found that they helped with two issues that typically disrupt her sleep: anxious thoughts and chronic pain.
What our tester says “I experience spiraling thoughts or ruminations. This capsule helped quiet my nervous thoughts, which, in turn, let me fall asleep — in a way that wasn’t sedating, which has been difficult for me of late with anxiety Rx or supplemental sleep aids. The latter have made awakening and early morning meetings difficult. But cbdMD just quieted my anxious subconscious.
“Over the past 10 years I’ve experienced rigidity, pain, spasms, and migraines in my muscles and nerves along my neck, trapezius, and clavicle that I now know are the result of fibromyalgia, occipital neuralgia, and myofascial pain syndrome in my neck/trapezius.
“My pain management team has emphasized the importance of ironing out impending pain episodes before they peak. My problem is I usually can’t find a remedy strong enough to do so without incapacitating me or impeding my cognition. I have a job that I need to stay mentally sharp for, so pain medications usually have a side effect of sedation or inebriation.
“The 100 mg per dose was ideal for knocking out the pain before it climaxed. The CBD kept my nerves calm and thus my muscles unbothered, when, for me, my nerves would become ‘angry’ and my muscles would tighten, harden, and stay inflamed, rigid, and painful. This would trigger migraine and the whole pain episode from just simple sudden physical exertion to my neck or shoulders.
“I didn’t have not one symptom after sudden lifting and exerting. I was able to hoist and attach a heavy bike rack to my hybrid SUV and an even heavier beach cruiser. That hasn’t happened pain-free in years!
“I felt the effects within an hour of ingestion. I have a slow digestion, so it takes my body longer than what’s typical to metabolize. The capsules went down smoothly. No taste, no burp, and no aftertaste.”

Healthline's review For those with some CBD experience, a high potency oil can make for a quicker trip to sleep.
This shouldn’t be your first pick if you’re new to CBD. But if you know how CBD affects you, you may find this full-spectrum formula helps you drift off to sleep quicker and more deeply than lower potencies.
This unflavored oil from CBDistillery offers 5,000 mg per 30-mL bottle. One full dropper gives you 167 mg per serving, while one-half dropper offers 83 mg.
Our tester found it sent her to sleep faster, noting that the taste, while still earthy, doesn’t come with an offensive aftertaste. She felt it was almost too effective for her, and that she would save it for nights when she was particularly anxious or struggling to sleep.
Keep in mind that full-spectrum CBD, like this formula, contains some trace amounts of THC (less than 3%), so it’s not suited for those looking to avoid THC altogether. Those folks may find CBD isolate more suitable.
Though the bottle’s price tag is steep, the cost is actually a value considering the formula’s extra high potency, cashing out at around $0.05 per mg.
What our tester says “CBDistillery’s ahhh oil has no added flavoring, so it is just the herbal, earthy taste of CBD. Its aftertaste wasn’t overly heavy. However, nor did it linger for longer than a minute, especially when taken under the tongue. This seemed like the nicest unflavored oil I’ve used so far — it was more on the herbal side than the earthy/musty taste, and it didn’t linger too long.
“This is CBDistillery’s strongest oil (5,000 mg in a 1-ounce bottle), so one dropperful was very effective for me! I generally take a 50-mg CBD gummy for sleep most nights, and substituted this in its place. Within 10 to 20 minutes of taking one serving orally (even with scrolling on my phone in bed), I found my eyes getting extremely heavy and my entire body relaxing. I was able to fall asleep consistently with this product.
“I think it probably worked better than I needed it to, for this purpose. I’ll probably save the rest of the bottle for particularly anxious nights.
“There was a safety seal on the vial’s lid, which is also a childproof cap. I appreciated that double layer of security. Both the box and the vial have a QR code so you can review the COA and other information on that specific batch of CBD.
“One small gripe was that the QR code didn’t send me directly to that batch’s information. It sent me to a search page, where I had to enter the batch number.
“It was a bit annoying that there are no markings on the dropper, so you just have to eyeball what a ‘full’ or ‘half’ serving is. However, these minor gripes pale when weighing them against the effectiveness of this product.
“It undeniably worked great for falling asleep! Though I think it packs more of a punch than I personally need. But if I needed a higher dose of CBD, this product would definitely be a contender.”

Healthline's review CBD beginners may find this highly rated oil suits their sleep needs — and at a more budget-friendly price than some of our other full-spectrum picks.
One of our testers found the oil’s effect gradual but helpful, noting a physical calming effect and a noticeable improvement in relaxing before bedtime.
Though it’s a full-spectrum formula, like the Aspen Green Oil and CBDistillery picks on our list, it’s available in three slightly milder potencies: 375 mg per 15-mL bottle and 750 or 1,500 mg per 30-mL bottle.
The USDA organic formula includes just two ingredients: organic MCT coconut oil and organic hemp flower extract.
The company uses flower-only hemp, removing all stems, stalks, leaves, or seeds from the extract.
What our tester says “I used it before bed to help with sleeping, but mostly used for underlying anxiety/stress I experience before bed but also throughout the day. So I also used it in the mornings before the workday.
“I’ve had quite a few CBD oils in my time and this one had the most subtle taste; I almost didn’t taste it at all. Some oils have a strong or very potent hemp-like taste, but this CBD oil was fairly smooth in my opinion.
“It had a very neutral scent, nothing strong that I noticed.
“It had a noticeable and very physical calming effect and helped reduce that anxiety-inducing pit in your stomach that allowed me to be more productive throughout the day and also relax for bed at night. I also noticed that it took effect pretty quickly, but it did seem to still be a gradual effect, which was good.
“I would say it’s great for anyone experiencing any stress or anxiety that is preventing them from focusing throughout the workday, preventing them from sleeping.”

Many people use CBD for insomnia and other sleep disorders. You can experience insomnia for many reasons, including physical pain and anxiety.
Since CBD shows promise in helping relieve pain and anxiety , it makes sense that it may help people sleep better.
For example, a 2024 study on the use of CBD for sleep compared the effectiveness of CBD with that of melatonin alone or mixed with minor cannabinoids.
The researchers found that ongoing use of low dose CBD is safe and effective for boosting sleep quality, though its effects do not surpass those of using 5 mg of melatonin.
The results also showed that adding low doses of cannabinol (CBN) and cannabichromene (CBC) may not boost the effects of CBD or melatonin isolate.
As we mentioned, CBD’s potential interactions with vitamins, minerals, and supplements, including melatonin, are still unknown. This means it’s safer to avoid products that blend these ingredients since we don’t have research on their safety.
Still, carefully vetted CBD products, like those on our list, may help you sleep better. It’s also a good idea to check with a qualified healthcare professional first and scan product labels carefully, looking for potential allergens or sensitivities.
Generally, many people can tolerate CBD well, but it does have some possible side effects. According to 2017 review , the side effects of CBD include:
diarrhea changes in appetite changes in weight fatigue drowsiness jitteriness CBD can also interact with some medications . Medications that come with a grapefruit warning may be unsafe to use with CBD. To be safe, always talk with a doctor or another healthcare professional before trying CBD.
CBD products can also contain THC. It’s important to know whether the CBD product you’re using contains THC, as it can show up on a drug test.
If you can, work with a knowledgeable cannabis clinician .
If you’ve followed tips for better sleep , sipped some sleepy tea , and tried CBD for sleep and you still haven’t found better rest, talk with a healthcare professional. After learning more about your lifestyle and sleep habits and doing an exam, they may be able to identify a cause.
During your visit, be sure to mention any factors that could be contributing to your sleep issues, including any supplements or medications you take and whether you experience depression, anxiety, or chronic pain.
A healthcare professional might recommend that you visit a sleep specialist and undergo a sleep study test to find the best course of action for your sleep difficulties.
Can CBD improve sleep quality?
CBD may help your body transition from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep to non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep more quickly. More specifically, a 2014 case series suggests that CBD may help improve REM sleep behaviors in people with Parkinson’s disease.
A 2016 case report of a 10-year-old girl also suggests that CBD may help with anxiety and insomnia in people living with post-traumatic stress disorder. But more research is needed.

A 2014 research review suggests that higher doses of CBD may help improve insomnia symptoms. But taking lower doses may have the opposite effect and promote wakefulness.
In a 2023 review of 34 studies on CBD use for managing insomnia, all the studies reported improvement in insomnia symptoms for at least some of the participants. The researchers also noted that CBD by itself or combined with an equal amount of THC may be helpful for insomnia relief.

Is CBD legal? The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the legal definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. This made some hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC federally legal. However, CBD products containing more than 0.3% THC still fall under the legal definition of marijuana, making them federally illegal but legal under some state laws. Be sure to check state laws , especially when traveling. Also, keep in mind that the FDA has not approved nonprescription CBD products, and some products may be inaccurately labeled.
